Every time I read the bible, especially the New Testament, I fall in love with Jesus again! Jesus really left us a road map for our life through His word because it is full of wisdom on how to live our lives the way God wants us to live. We are called to live our lives rooted in Christ after receiving Him as our Lord and Saviour and that is only possible when we are strengthened in faith and full of thankfulness for all He did, does, and will continue to do (receive the future benedictions by faith) for us (Colossians 2: 6). And that happens only if we spend time in the presence of God.
According to Colossians 2:10, we have been brought to fullness in Christ. If you received Jesus in your life, you are now full. We were missing a part before and now we can fully enjoy our life. We were controlled and ruled by the desires of our flesh but Jesus gave us freedom, all praises to Him!
In him, you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. Colossians 2: 11-12
Those two verses cited above use human circumcision as an example of what happened to us when we received Jesus; the freedom we have acquired through Him. Let’s explain human circumcision a little bit to get a picture of what is being said here. It is performed by removing the skin that covers the top of the penis and this is mostly done as preventive healthcare. When we accepted Jesus as our savior and buried in Him, we were being circumcised and all the rules, regulations, and envy of our flesh were being removed to give place to our new nature and identity found in Jesus Christ, our healthy self. Every sin in us was being replaced by Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and everything that comes to us through them by faith such as love, peace, joy, kindness, self-control, etc.
Maybe you would ask yourself why there are some weaknesses that you can’t manage to get rid of? The response is to let God do it for you, do not use your own strengths. Submit yourself to God, be honest, and pray about it. Let God take care of everything but make sure to be on your guard and try everything you can to not fall into your weaknesses. Don’t say that you can’t help it but keep doing the same thing because you can. Every time your weakness comes to your mind, call on Jesus, refuse to fall into the same temptation and it will become easier as you continue. In case you do fall into the temptation because we do since we are humans, do not let the devil get in your ears and start condemning you because the Holy Spirit never condemns us but He corrects us in love and He does not get tired to help you get back on your feet so don’t stop asking Him for His help when trying to stand up after your fall. We were made alive in Christ, we are forgiven, Jesus nailed our condemnation on the cross and He triumphed our iniquities by the cross and His resurrection.
In this chapter, Paul reminded the church of Colossae to not let others bind them to rules and regulations while they have been given freedom. We have been given complete freedom in Christ, we are free from fear, insecurities, anger, etc. Let us not give place to the lies of the devil but give our complete faith and our whole to Jesus. Let us give Him and the Holy Spirit control of our lives and He will give us the ability to fight against our flesh and give us new desires. Life in Jesus is so good and easier than we think. We just need to submit and surrender ourselves to God and the Almighty, King of all Kings will fill us with His goodness. I do love to have control in life but let’s be sincere, it is frustrating and stressful to always be on top of everything. The good news is that Jesus does it for us and He ALWAYS finds ways to amaze whoever let Him direct his/her life. However, by “letting God” you don’t get to sit back and watch Him work, you also have to do your part in seeking Him.
