The book of Colossians is full of priceless knowledge. I know the whole Bible does but this particular book has touched me in so many ways yet it has only four chapters. Today I want to dig deeper into Colossians chapter 1. The book has been written by Paul and Timothy for the church in Colossae. Paul was in prison but he was still full of the Holy Spirit and the passion to do God’s work to the point of writing a letter to a church he has never been to, just to challenge them to examine their lives and invite them to be transformed and renewed through the love of Jesus Christ.
I believe that there is a seed that was planted in us the day we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and every time we hear the word of God, approach our God in prayer and supplication as well as study His word, we are watering the seed giving ourselves a chance to grow in the knowledge of God through the wisdom and understanding only given by the Holy Spirit as Colossians 1:9 says it well. That seed is there and exists to bear fruits.
We are called to live a life worthy of the Lord and to please Him in every way (Colossians 1:10). I believe this can only be possible if we bear His fruits and share them with the world through good deeds and godly love. I emphasize on godly love because it is easy to love our family and friends or loveable people but it is not easy to love those who mistreated us, cursed us, or persecuted us. I have been there and I have experienced that everything lays on the power of the decision to forgive those who have hurt us. It only takes a decision. Only God’s love in us can help us love everyone without exception. That love is already in us because God is love (1 John 4:8) and He lives in us (1 John 4:12). Take that decision, pray about it, and pray for those who have hurt you every time the devil brings it back in your mind; remind yourself that you forgave them. Be gentle to yourself; it is a process.
The question is, how can we be able to love like that and bear fruits? in spending time in the presence of God. It is as simple as that! Have you tried many times to spend time with God but you just don’t have time due to your crazy busy life? You are not alone. However, that is the work of the devil. He tries to keep us busy because he knows how much we would gain in the presence of God.
Let us decide to be consistent in spending time with God, doing good things on purpose even though we don’t feel like it. From there, we will be fruitful and able to share the light of the Lord with this dark world. It is only in spending time with God that we will be able to know Him more, know and understand His will, and live a joyful life as He wants us to live.
Believe it, we have all the fruits of the Holy Spirit in us because He lives in us. We just need to often ask Him to guide us in all our daily decisions. And by spending more time with God, they will start to take over the desires of our flesh. Being consistent will enable us to grow in His knowledge.
