Today, I was reading Mark 4 and some words kept my attention as they kept coming. The chapter talks about different subjects but the common denominator is that Jesus was talking in parables while surrounded by a crowd and would explain what He said when with His disciples.
When reading verses 11 and 12, I asked the Holy Spirit to explain to me how Jesus did not want people to discern His words as He says”
“The secret of the kingdom of God had been given to you (the disciples). But to those on the outside, everything is said in parables so that,
They may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
And ever hearing but never understanding;
Otherwise, they might turn and be forgiven!”
Doesn’t Jesus want everyone to be forgiven? Wasn’t He His goal when He accepted to die for our sins? To redeem everyone?
Then the Holy Spirit showed me that paraboles are like movie trailers. Movie trailers are published to create excitement and envy in people to go watch the movie as soon as it goes out in the movie theaters. Usually, they show us a part where the main actor is performing to fuel that excitement, especially in case the actor is a celebrity.
Jesus was talking in parables to create excitement and enhance questions in people’s hearts for them to approach Him. They are used to invite the listeners into a deeper relationship with Jesus.
We can then separate the people surrounding God into two groups. The crowd and the disciples. The crowd is there to listen and cheer on what Jesus is saying. However, the disciples were always asking Jesus questions after He had spoken to them in parables as they wanted to know more, understand better, and most importantly get a closer relationship with Jesus.
Let us long for and walk every day towards a closer relationship with Jesus. Let us be His disciples, wanting to know more, getting more thirsty and hungry for His word. Let us surrender ourselves to Him and let His word fuel our zeal to help us live a life full of Him. For from there, we will be transformed and renewed (Romans 12:2) and equipped to face the world (Ephesians 6: 11-18). We will be able to bring many to Jesus and keep winning the battle over the devil.
