Jesus is Alive (1 John 1)

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us”. (1 John 1: 1-2).

Today, we start a new study on the first book of John. In this book, the apostle is writing to churches as a witness of the existence of Jesus. In the above verses, the apostle mentions that the same Jesus they saw, witnessed with their own eyes, and touched with their own hands, already existed from the beginning. This means that both God and the Holy Spirit already existed. Genesis chapter one verse one tells us that in the beginning, God created heaven and the earth. For God to create that, He must have been already alive.

Genesis chapter one verse two says: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters”. Again, this is another proof that the Holy Spirit existed before the creation of the universe. John 10:30 says that Jesus and the Father are one. Therefore, Jesus existed before the creation of the world.

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:3)

The purpose of sharing Jesus’s story is to bring others to Him and also to have fellowship between us, Christians. Fellowship is the relationship that we have with one another as Christians. It is based on the relationship we have with Jesus. When you and I became Christians three relationships were created: Jesus became our Savior; God became our Father, and the church (the body of Christ) became our family. We need one another in our spiritual journey and God blesses us with being part of a church family. I encourage you all to find a church that makes you feel like you are at home, that shares the same value and goal as you; to proclaim Jesus to the world and bring many to Him. I know it is easy and comfortable to love Jesus from the comfort of your house but you need to get out of your comfort zone. The only way you can find that family is by looking for it. It is not always easy, you may encounter difficulties or even disappointments but always remember that God is your comforter and will always do the best for you. Ask Him for guidance because we need that fellowship.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin”. (1 John 1: 5-7)

Here, fellowship with God is synonymous with salvation. When we believe in Jesus, we are invited into an intimate and unending fellowship with the Trinity. However, since God is Light, we must walk in the light everywhere we are. People who walk in the light are people who have no deliberate or conscious unrighteousness or sin in their lives. This means that we of course will find ourselves in sins but we need to remember that God’s forgiveness is always available for us and His mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

I invite you all to take a few minutes and think about your life when you are home, at your job, at school, when with friends, at church, etc; are you being a light to others? What are you doing, for them to see God through you? Do you attend church on Sundays only? Are you searching for ways to be in fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ either at church or in other places? I encourage you to find ways today to be the light wherever you go and start looking for fellowship opportunities as this is the best way to hear more from God and experience other people’s testimonies which will contribute to your spiritual growth. Look for practical ways of developing fellowship such as worshipping with others, supporting them when in need, praying for them, etc.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for your existence, thank you Jesus for coming to earth for me to get an opportunity of being a child of God. Help me to be the light of the world and find ways to always be the evidence, the proof that you exist. Help me to be in Fellowship with other believers on all occasions. For those who do not have a church, I pray for Your guidance to find one and be in fellowship with other believers, in Jesus’ name. Amen
