We are children of God (1 John 3)

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1)

If you have received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are a child of God! We often tend to take this statement lightly but let’s try to go deeper into its meaning today. The verse above uses the word “lavished” which means granting something in generous or extravagant quantity. God has granted His love to us when we did not deserve it which brought us to Him and made us called children of God.

Both my two kids look like their father. I learn a lot when I pay attention to the older one who is three years old. He likes to imitate his father and likes to spend time with him. You can see how much he feels safe, and happy when they are together. Whether he is happy or sad he runs to his father as soon as he sees him. He tells him how his day was at the daycare, who he played with, and who hurt him. This reminds me that we should all be like this baby toward our heavenly Father. We should run to him no matter the circumstances we are in, we should tell Him everything, we should tell Him that we want to hug Him (Yes I sometimes do this even though it sounds crazy), and we should long to be in His presence and enjoy every second of it.

No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. (1 John 3: 6-7)

As adults, we find ourselves living our life based on the different principles we learned in our childhood, especially those learned through our family. Likewise, we should live this life based on what God teaches us during the time we spend with Him. Most of the time you will find yourself forced to unlearn many things before learning new things from God and that is okay. It is actually great since we learn a lot from the world and since we are not from the world, we need to unlearn those principles to be able to learn new ones and become like Christ.

No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this, it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother and sister. (1 John 3: 9-10)

Let’s live our lives as children of God by imitating Jesus Christ every day. Let everyone you encounter see righteousness, gentleness, and God’s mercy. Let us be good ambassadors of Christ. We do that by avoiding sin in all its form and by asking for forgiveness every time we find ourselves in sin.

God is indeed our Father. It may be hard to grasp this truth but I encourage you to ask God to appear to you as a Father and this will change your life. It can be hard if you did not see your physical father since you may not know what a child and father relationship looks like but just let God know that you want to experience Him more as a Father and He will make it happen.

A father-child relationship is a beautiful and blessed one. From birth, the father plays an essential role in molding his life. He constantly shares valuable lessons with his child and guides him in the right direction. He becomes his friend, guide, teacher, and best companion throughout his childhood. Both father and his child indulge in several activities that strengthen their bond. As the child grows, the bond between the two evolves, and so does their love for each other.

Prayer: God, thank you for your unmerited love. Thank you for making me your son/ daughter through salvation. I ask you to show yourself to me more as a Father. I deeply want to have a father-son/ daughter relationship with you. I want to run to You no matter the circumstances I am in. I want to come and cry on your shoulder in tough times and laugh hard with you in good times. I want all of it! My heart longs for a deeper relationship with you. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen.
