Live wisely

The word “wisdom” is such a heavy word to me and every time I read it in the bible I spend as much time as possible comparing the different meanings in the context it is used. I think any one of us would like to live wisely, and the good thing is that even the bible tells us to do so and put an emphasis on being careful about it.

Be very careful, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5: 15:20)

As children of God, we have to live wisely. These verses reminded me that we are the light of the world. And everything exposed by the light becomes visible (Ephesians 5:13). The world is full of darkness and it needs your light, it is time to light up all the darkness of this world. We need to be very careful because the world can easily influence us as our flesh is pleased with so many things from it. To be able to do this, we must abide in the word, and fill our minds and our hearts with it.

When meditating on this verse with a friend, God reminded me of a dream I had a few years ago. I was sitting outside with my friends, and we could see another group of people sitting near us when suddenly I saw a beautiful white horse coming from the sky. When I saw that, I went towards the horse with my arms open, ready to go, as I knew that it was Jesus coming to get me. However, the horse stopped before touching the ground, and I looked around me and realized that I was the only one who saw the horse. After seeing that, I felt so sad because I understood that God was telling me that I was sitting with people who didn’t know Him and I wasn’t doing anything about it.

Think about the people around you, did you think about anyone who doesn’t know God? Are you doing anything about it? We must make the most of every opportunity we get with other people and tell them about Jesus. This does not mean that you have to teach but look for ways to show God’s love, patience, faithfulness, mercy, and forgiveness; live like Jesus. Let them know the joy we get from Him, and how much our lives became beautiful when we started walking with Him. Use the time you have to tell your loved ones how much you love them, enjoy every second of your life, and don’t spend any more time complaining about the things you don’t have because you have so many other things you are not paying attention to that are even more valuable. Let’s always stop before reacting to some situations and take a moment to think about what Jesus would do in the same situation.

To be foolish here is to walk outside of the will of God. We need to be filled by the Holy Spirit every day so that we can know and understand the will of God in our lives. I remember hearing a pastor saying that God’s voice is like a radio frequency. You can only listen to a radio when you turn it on first and put the frequency you want to listen to. In the same way, if we don’t listen to the Holy Spirit in us, if we don’t take time to open our bible, and talk to God, we can never hear Him; therefore, we would never hear His voice, His will on our lives.

Let’s make time for God and spend time in His word, let’s ask Him to fill us with His word as well as the Holy Spirit. Let’s open our mouths and tell others what God has done for us. Let His Kingdom come and live among us. Let’s serve Him in all the ways we can.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for your goodness. Thank you for making yourself known to me. May the Holy Spirit fill me for the rest of my life. I want to abide in you and you in me forever. I want to serve you at every opportunity I get; in my house, at my job, in the grocery store, etc. May my mouth sing your goodness, faithfulness, and love all the days of my life. May the joy and the word of life you have put in me overflow and affect everyone I encounter, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
