You are a child of God

God has been teaching me about “being a child of God” and unfortunately I found myself not really knowing what that means and not truly believing it in my heart. These teachings have brought me to a place of questioning myself on that subject and going back to the truth, the word of God, to learn more about it. I believe that today will be the beginning of a series of devotionals about being a child of God; what it means, and what comes with it.

“In Him was life and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1: 4-5

Starting from the beginning, God and man were in harmony, He was the light of mankind. Then darkness came into the world through Adam and Eve’s fall. Salvation became hard and men had to earn it by following the law of Moses. Jesus came to bring back the light as He, Himself is the light. Everyone who knows Him and has received Him has the light of life, that can never be overcome by darkness. Therefore, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, salvation became easy, and simple to get. Anyone can get it through a simple “Yes”. We do not have to earn it anymore by working hard or following laws but by accepting Him as the Lord and Savior of our lives, the light comes into us and dwells in us. We become one and are called children of God, His very own children born not by flesh but by God (John 1:13).

This does not mean that we can go back to our old doings after saying Yes to Him; rather, since the light lives in us now, our identity changes, and the things that used to be of interest become meaningless as we embrace our new identity in Him. We need to reflect on who we think we are, compare it with the truth of God, which is who He says we are as His children, children of light, and see if we are currently living the truth. Darkness cannot cohabit with light and since the light in us cannot be overcome by darkness, we ought to live a life that reflects the light in us.

This was a lot for me to meditate on. Most of the time we don’t really live by the truth because the devil put so much lies in us that we begin to believe in them. Let me talk about my very recent experience, I got something new that is of high value and thought that I do not deserve it. I was trying to hide it from other people and found myself many times preparing a speech to give to my friends in case they would ask me how I got it. The speech was really to make me feel better, to explain to them that I was really in need of that specific thing and did not buy it just for boasting. I was considering it more valuable than me. I heard God asking me “Do you really think this is more valuable than you? You are my daughter and everything you can see and those that you do not see are mine. How can you even think such a thing? a daughter of the most high!” Wow, this was life-changing for me because I started to understand that I am His daughter! What shouldn’t He give me? Only things that are not beneficial for me. His responses to our prayers are: yes and I have better.

I love God so much because He always brings something at the right time. This is the time for us to know well our new identity in God and everything that comes with it. I believe that this will be the best weapon we can use to fight the devil because if we know who we are, then we know who is our Father. By knowing Him, we will not fear anymore any attack from the devil because we will be able to testify that we have seen and comprehended who is standing by our sides.

In John chapter one, we see that John was sent from God in his time to testify about the one who will come after him, the light, so that through Him all might believe (John 1: 6-7). I truly believe we as believers of this particular time, have been sent from God to be witnesses of who God is and testify it loudly and widely, to everyone so that they might believe. By knowing who He is and our identity in Him, we can bring many to Him for them to experience the beauty of being called children of God and living a life full of His grace and truth.

Prayer: Father God, I thank You for Your mercy, I thank You for sending Jesus so that we may experience the simplicity of your salvation and being called your children. Help us to live a life that reflects the light in us and our identity in You. Help us to understand what it means to be your child and take advantage of every part of it. Help us to bring many to you by boldly testifying who You are like the woman at the well who ran to tell others who she encountered after meeting Jesus. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
