How do you approach your day? In calm and serenity, knowing that God is in control, or in anxiety, dreading what the day has in store for you? The way you approach your day will tell you about your priorities and which place God has in your life.
In Matthew 6: 31-33, Jesus tells us:
31″Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink ?’ or “What shall we wear ?” . 32For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”
The best way to spend the day is to begin it and spend it in the presence of God. We are often extremely busy. The race against time begins as soon as we wake up, with a whole list of things to do. And we find ourselves at the end of the day, exhausted, stressed and already anticipating the stress of the following day. With the hectic pace of life that we know, it is very easy to go through the day without praying or to pray mechanically in the morning but to spend the rest of the day without a single thought of God.
Spending the day in the presence of God does not mean staying locked in your room praying all day, but it means letting God lead us in all our activities of the day, remaining aware of his presence and maintaining communication with him. It is about living each moment of the day being aware of his presence, speaking to him on occasion and remaining attentive to what he wants to tell us, being ready to follow the direction he gives us.
Our God is the source of everything we need, it is he who enables us to do what we need or want to do. It is, therefore, in our interest to make room for him throughout our day.
Starting the day with God and involve him in all that we do helps us to have dominion over life’s circumstances instead of being crushed by them. It is from the presence of God that we draw the strength, wisdom and direction necessary to respond to the different demands of the day. Indeed, by inviting God to spend the day with us, we give him the space and freedom to act in us to inspire our decisions and make us capable of doing his will. So we approach the day calmly, with the assurance that God within us is in control, if at least we actually let him take control.
Will everything be perfect though? Is this a guarantee that no bad news will fall on us? No way. But it is a guarantee that whatever happens, whatever we go through, we are not alone. God is there and he will make everything work together for our good, in his time.
In short, it is about putting God back at the center of our life, in our work, in our interactions, in our thoughts, in our schedule,… Instead of reserving the crumbs of our time for God, we should give him priority and let him help us cross this long river that is life. You will see, things will become much easier.
Prayer: Father God, help me to review my priorities. I want to make you the hub, the centerpiece of my life. Renew my intelligence so that this becomes a reality in my life. Amen.
