Scripture Focus: Matthew 1 & 2
Scripture reminds me that obedience often precedes understanding. From the very beginning of Jesus’ story, we do not see hesitation, debate, or delayed faith—we see immediate obedience. “This took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet” (Matthew 1:22). God’s plan unfolded not because His people had all the answers, but because they trusted His voice enough to obey it.
When the angel appeared to Mary and declared what seemed impossible, her response was not resistance but surrender. “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Today, I declare that same posture in my own life. I choose to trust God’s word over my fear, His promise over my logic, and His will over my comfort.
Joseph’s obedience speaks just as powerfully. When he learned in a dream that the child Mary carried was conceived by the Holy Spirit, he did not retreat in doubt or delay in uncertainty. Scripture tells us plainly that “Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him” (Matthew 1:24). I declare a faith that responds swiftly—one that does not require repeated confirmation before taking the next step God asks of me.
Later, when warned in a dream to flee to Egypt because Herod sought Jesus’ life, Scripture says simply, “So he got up”(Matthew 2:14). No recorded questions. No negotiation. Just obedience. I declare that I, too, will rise when God calls me to move, even when the road ahead is unfamiliar and the cost feels heavy.
And when the danger passed, the pattern remained the same. Once again, Joseph was told in a dream to return to Israel, and once again the Word says, “So he got up” (Matthew 2:21). Obedience was not a one-time act—it was a way of life. I declare a consistency of faith that does not grow weary in well-doing, but remains attentive to God’s voice season after season.
Joseph’s obedience contributed to the fulfillment of God’s greater plan. He carried out his assignment so that Jesus could grow into His own. Today, I pause to ask myself: Am I being obedient without constant questioning? Do I recognize God’s voice well enough to follow it without confusing it with my own? Am I fulfilling my assignment so that those entrusted to me—my children, my family, those I lead—can fulfill theirs?
Whether this moment opens my day or brings it to rest, I declare that I will walk by faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Even when the reward is not immediate or tangible, I trust that obedience is never wasted in God’s economy.
Today, I choose obedience. I choose trust. I choose to get up when God speaks—confident that every step of faith moves His purpose forward, in me and through me. Amen.
Prayer:
Lord, I surrender my heart and my will to You. Help me to hear Your voice clearly and to obey without hesitation. Like Mary and Joseph, I choose trust over understanding and faith over fear. Strengthen me to fulfill my assignment so that Your purposes may be accomplished through my obedience. I rest in You, knowing that You are faithful and that nothing done in obedience to You is ever in vain.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
