Scripture Focus: Matthew 9
Faith begins in the heart, but it is revealed through what we are willing to bring to Jesus. In Matthew 9, we see that faith is never passive—it moves toward Him, even when circumstances feel impossible. When a paralyzed man is brought before Jesus, Scripture tells us that “when Jesus saw their faith,” He spoke words of forgiveness and restoration (Matthew 9:2). Before healing the body, Jesus addressed the deeper need of the soul, reminding us that His authority reaches far beyond what is visible.
This moment stirred resistance among the religious leaders, who questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. Yet Jesus responded not with argument, but with power. He healed the paralyzed man instantly, proving that the One who forgives sins also has authority to heal and restore completely (Matthew 9:6–7). Forgiveness and healing flow from the same compassionate heart. Faith, when placed in Jesus, opens the door for both.
Later in the chapter, we encounter a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. Her suffering was long, her hope quiet, yet her faith was unwavering. She believed that even touching the edge of Jesus’ garment would be enough. And it was. Jesus turned to her and said, “Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you” (Matthew 9:22). What she carried for years ended in a moment because she trusted in His power.
Still, Jesus continues to reveal how deeply faith moves Him. When two blind men cry out for mercy, He asks them a simple but profound question: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” When they answered yes, Jesus declared, “According to your faith let it be done to you,” and their sight was restored (Matthew 9:28–29). Their healing was not based on how loudly they cried out, but on how deeply they believed.
This reflection invites us to examine our own hearts. How long have we been praying for something? Have we allowed waiting to weaken our faith, or do we still believe that Jesus is able? Matthew 9 reminds us that Jesus is still moved by faith—faith that comes honestly, perseveres through suffering, and trusts His authority even before the answer is seen. When we bring our needs, wounds, and prayers to Him, we are invited to believe not in circumstances, but in who He is.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, increase my faith. Help me to trust Your authority and come to You with confidence, believing that You are able to heal, forgive, and restore. Teach me to persevere in prayer and to place my hope fully in You. Amen.
