In Matthew 10, Jesus speaks tenderly but honestly to His disciples about the cost of following Him. He does not promise ease, but He does promise presence. As He sends them out, He knows they will face fear, opposition, and moments of uncertainty. Yet in the middle of those warnings, Jesus offers a powerful reassurance: “When they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you” (Matthew 10:19–20).
This promise invites us to release control. So often, fear grips us because we want to be prepared, articulate, and in control of outcomes. Jesus calls us instead to dependence. He reminds us that obedience does not require perfect words—only a willing heart. When we step forward in faith, God Himself supplies what we lack. The pressure to perform is replaced with the peace of trusting that the Father speaks through us.
Jesus continues by addressing fear directly. He urges us not to be afraid of people or their opinions, but to fear God alone—the One who holds both our lives and our eternity (Matthew 10:28). When we remember who truly sustains us, the voices of fear grow quieter. Our confidence shifts from ourselves to the God who sees every detail of our lives, even the fall of a sparrow (Matthew 10:29–31).
Living this way requires courage. Jesus is clear that following Him may bring tension, sacrifice, and hard choices (Matthew 10:34–39). But He also reveals a deeper truth: life is found when we entrust it fully to Him. When we stop striving to protect ourselves and start trusting God’s leading, we experience freedom—not because the path is easy, but because we are never walking it alone.
This reflection calls us to ask: Where is God inviting me to trust Him more? Where am I holding back out of fear? Jesus reminds us that when we step out in faith, the Father is already present, ready to speak, guide, and sustain us.
Prayer
Father God, teach me to trust You with my words, my steps, and my future. When fear rises, remind me that Your Spirit lives within me and will speak through me. Help me walk in courage, obedience, and confidence in Your care. Amen.
