Scripture Focus: Matthew 28
As we end the book of Matthew, we are invited to reflect on how the story of Jesus does not end in death, but in resurrection and mission. Matthew 28 opens with a powerful contrast of emotions: the women were afraid, yet filled with joy (Matthew 28:8). They had witnessed suffering and loss, and now they were encountering hope beyond what they could understand. Even in their fear, they obeyed and ran to tell the disciples what they had seen. Their faith was not perfect, but it was obedient.
When the disciples saw Jesus in Galilee, they worshiped Him, yet some still doubted (Matthew 28:16–17). This moment reminds us that faith and doubt can exist side by side. Seeing the risen Christ did not remove all their questions, but it awakened their worship. Jesus did not reject them for their hesitation. Instead, He drew near and entrusted them with His greatest mission.
Jesus then spoke words that still shape our lives today: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”(Matthew 28:18). The One who had been crucified now stood in victory. From suffering came authority, and from the grave came purpose. Jesus sent His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He had commanded (Matthew 28:19–20). Their fear was transformed into calling, and their doubt into obedience.
As Matthew comes to an end, we realize that the story continues through us. The Gospel does not close with a farewell, but with a promise: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Jesus does not send us alone. He walks with us, strengthens us, and remains present in every step of our journey of faith.
This final chapter challenges us to ask: How will we respond to the risen Christ? Will we remain in fear and hesitation, or will we go forward in obedience and trust? Like the women and the disciples, we may not have perfect faith, but we are called to be faithful witnesses. The end of Matthew is truly the beginning of our mission—to live out the Gospel and to make Jesus known through our lives.
