Daily Reflection: Responding to Jesus

Scripture Focus: Luke 5

As I read Gospel of Luke chapter 5, I notice how different people respond when they encounter Jesus.

At the beginning of the chapter, Simon allows Jesus to sit in his boat and teach the crowds. Simon could have refused, but he chose to let Jesus use what he had. After teaching, Jesus told him to go deeper and lower the nets.

Simon answered:

“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
— Luke 5:5

Simon was an experienced fisherman. From a human perspective, what Jesus asked probably did not make sense. Yet Simon chose to obey anyway. Because of that obedience, a miracle happened. The nets filled with so many fish that they began to break (Luke 5:6–7).

But what stands out even more than the miracle is Simon’s response. Instead of celebrating the catch, he fell before Jesus in humility and recognized his own sinfulness. In that moment, he understood that he was standing before someone far greater than himself.

Jesus responded with grace and gave him a new purpose:

“Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
— Luke 5:10

Simon and the others left everything and followed Him (Luke 5:11). They did not even stay to profit from the large catch of fish. Encountering Jesus changed their priorities completely.

Later in the chapter we see this same theme again when a paralyzed man is brought to Jesus. Seeing the faith of those who brought him, Jesus said:

“Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
— Luke 5:20

The man experienced both forgiveness and healing, and he went home walking and praising God.

At the end of the chapter, Jesus explains the heart of His mission:

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
— Luke 5:31–32

Luke chapter 5 reminds me that when we truly encounter Jesus, it always leads to a response. For Simon, it was obedience and surrender. For the paralyzed man, it was faith and praise. And for all of us, it begins with recognizing our need for Him.

The question then becomes: How will I respond to Jesus?

Prayer

Lord, help me respond to You with obedience, humility, and faith. Open my heart to recognize my need for You and give me the courage to follow wherever You lead. Amen. 🙏
