Scripture Focus: Luke 6
As I read Luke chapter 6, a question comes to mind: Am I following rules, or am I truly following Christ?
At the beginning of the chapter, Jesus confronts the mindset of the Pharisees. They were focused on religious rules, especially concerning the Sabbath. Yet Jesus shows them that what they considered unlawful was not seen the same way in God’s eyes (Luke 6:3–4). Later, when He heals a man on the Sabbath, Jesus asks:
“Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
— Luke 6:9
This challenges me to examine my own heart. It is possible to feel at peace because I am doing things the “right” way, yet still miss the heart of Jesus.
Another powerful moment in this chapter is when Jesus spends the entire night praying:
“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.”
— Luke 6:12
If Jesus needed that one-on-one time with the Father, how much more do I need it? There is real spiritual power that comes from spending time with God.
Jesus then teaches what life in His kingdom looks like. He calls His followers to love their enemies, to treat others as they want to be treated, and to show mercy just as God is merciful (Luke 6:27–36). These teachings challenge how we treat people in everyday life, whether coworkers, friends, or even those who hurt us.
Jesus also reminds us that our hearts are revealed through our actions:
“Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.”
— Luke 6:44
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
— Luke 6:45
Finally, Jesus explains that those who hear His words and put them into practice are like someone who builds a house on a strong foundation (Luke 6:47–49).
Luke chapter 6 reminds me that following Jesus is not just about knowing His words or following religious habits. It is about allowing His teachings to transform my heart and building my life on Him.
So the question remains: Am I simply following rules, or am I truly following Christ?
Prayer
Lord, help me not to focus only on rules or appearances, but to truly follow You. Change my heart so that my life produces good fruit. Teach me to love others, show mercy, and build my life on Your Word. Draw me closer to You through prayer so that everything I do reflects Your heart. Amen. 🙏
