Daily Reflection: Recognizing Who Jesus Is

Scripture Focus: Luke 7

As I read Luke chapter 7, one question seems to run through the entire chapter: Who is Jesus? The different people who encounter Him respond in very different ways, but those who truly recognize Him experience His power, compassion, and forgiveness.

The chapter begins with a Roman centurion whose servant was very sick. The servant was someone he valued highly (Luke 7:2), and the elders came to Jesus pleading earnestly on his behalf (Luke 7:5). But when Jesus approached the house, the centurion sent a message that revealed something remarkable about his understanding of Jesus.

He said he was not worthy to have Jesus come under his roof. Instead, he believed that Jesus only needed to speak a word, and the servant would be healed. As a man under authority himself, he recognized that Jesus carried a far greater authority (Luke 7:6–8).

When Jesus heard this, Scripture says that He was amazed at him (Luke 7:9). The centurion saw something many others were missing: he recognized the authority of Jesus.

A little later, Jesus entered a town and encountered a funeral procession. A widow had just lost her only son. When Jesus saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, “Don’t cry” (Luke 7:13). Then He spoke directly to the young man:

“Young man, I say to you, get up!”
— Luke 7:14

Immediately the dead man sat up and began to speak. In that moment, the crowd realized that they were witnessing something extraordinary — the power of God at work among them.

Later in the chapter, Jesus speaks about John the Baptist and asks the crowd an important question:

“What did you go out into the wilderness to see?”
— Luke 7:24

Jesus challenges the people to reflect on what they are truly seeking. Many people had seen God’s work through John and through Jesus, yet they still struggled to recognize what was happening before their eyes. Some rejected the message entirely, criticizing both John and Jesus (Luke 7:33–35).

At the end of the chapter, we see a powerful contrast in the house of a Pharisee. A woman known for her sinful life came and stood behind Jesus weeping. She washed His feet with her tears, wiped them with her hair, and poured perfume on them (Luke 7:38).

While others judged her, Jesus explained that those who are forgiven much love much (Luke 7:44–47). Her actions revealed something the Pharisee had not yet understood: she recognized who Jesus was and the forgiveness He offered.

Jesus then said to her:

“Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
— Luke 7:50

Throughout Luke chapter 7, people encounter Jesus in different circumstances. Some question Him, some misunderstand Him, but others recognize Him for who He truly is. And those who do respond with faith, humility, and love.

This chapter invites us to ask the same question for ourselves: Do we truly recognize who Jesus is?

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to recognize who You truly are. Help me respond to You with faith, humility, and love. May my heart never miss what You are doing in my life. Amen. 🙏
