Scripture Focus: Luke 10
In Luke 10, Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples ahead of Him. Scripture says, “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go” (Luke 10:1). Their role was to prepare the way for Jesus. In many ways, this is also part of our calling as believers. Through our words, actions, and testimony, we help prepare hearts for people to encounter Christ.
When the disciples returned, they were filled with excitement and joy. They said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name!” (Luke 10:17). They had witnessed the authority of Jesus working through them, and it amazed them. Jesus responded by saying, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven” (Luke 10:18), reminding them that the power they experienced was part of God’s greater victory over evil.
Yet Jesus gently redirected their focus. He said, “However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). While the disciples were celebrating the power they had seen, Jesus reminded them that the greatest reason for joy is not what we do for God, but the relationship we have with Him. Our greatest victory is not the works we accomplish, but the salvation we receive.
Luke continues by showing Jesus rejoicing in the Holy Spirit and thanking the Father for revealing His truth to those who approach Him with humility and childlike faith (Luke 10:21). The Kingdom of God is not built on human wisdom or status but on hearts that are open to receive Him.
Later, when Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment, the answer is simple and profound: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, love your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). This command reveals the true heart of the Kingdom—love for God and love for others.
Luke 10 reminds us that while serving God and witnessing His power are wonderful blessings, our deepest joy should come from belonging to Him. Our identity is not defined by what we accomplish but by the fact that our names are written in heaven. When our relationship with God becomes the center of our lives, everything else flows from that place of love and gratitude.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for allowing us to be part of Your work and for using our lives to prepare the way for others to know You. Help us remember that our greatest joy is not in what we do, but in the relationship we have with You. Teach us to love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love others as You have loved us. Amen. 🙏
