Scripture Focus: Luke 20
In Luke 20:17, Jesus declares, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” What was once overlooked and dismissed has now become the very foundation. This reveals a powerful truth about God’s ways—what man rejects, God can exalt. Jesus Himself is that cornerstone, the One many refused, yet the One upon whom everything now stands. But this also invites a personal question: are you rejecting Him? Rejection is not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it looks like ignoring His voice, delaying obedience, choosing our own way over His, or keeping certain areas of our lives surrendered halfway. In subtle ways, we can treat Jesus as optional instead of foundational. Yet He is meant to be the very center—the One we build everything on.
In Luke 20:9–16, through the parable of the tenants, Jesus paints a deeper picture. The vineyard represents what God has entrusted to us. We are the tenants, called to steward what belongs to Him with faithfulness. Yet, throughout the story, the servants sent by the owner are mistreated, and finally, even the son is rejected and killed. This reflects the reality of how God’s messengers—and ultimately His Son—were treated.
This parable is not just a story of the past; it is a mirror for our hearts. God has entrusted us with our lives, our gifts, and our calling. The question is: how are we responding to Him? Are we honoring the Owner, or are we living as if everything belongs to us?
Then in Luke 20:23, we are reminded that “He saw through their duplicity.” Nothing is hidden from Jesus. He sees beyond appearances, beyond words, straight into the intentions of the heart. This can feel weighty, but it is also comforting—because the same God who sees all also gives us His Spirit.
Through the Holy Spirit, we are given discernment and wisdom. When we stay close to Him, pay attention to His voice, and involve Him in everything, He helps us see clearly—just as He does. He guides us in truth, protects us from deception, and aligns our hearts with His.
Jesus is the cornerstone we must build our lives upon. God calls us to be faithful stewards, to live with sincere hearts before Him, and to remain close enough to hear His voice and walk in His wisdom.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the cornerstone of my life. Help me to not reject You in any area, even in the small and hidden ways. Teach me to build everything on You and to walk in full surrender. Make me a faithful steward of all You have entrusted to me. Search my heart and make it sincere before You. Holy Spirit, guide me, give me discernment, and help me to stay close to Your voice in everything I do. Amen.
