Daily Reflection: Come Closer, Not Away

Scripture Focus: Luke 23

In Luke 23:9, we read, “He plied Him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.” Jesus, who had the wisdom and authority to respond, chose silence. This is striking—especially knowing that, as we saw before, He had been given words and wisdom that none could resist (Luke 21:15). Yet here, He does not defend Himself. Why? Because He knew His purpose. He knew He had to go to the cross—for you and for me. His silence was not weakness; it was surrender.

Then in Luke 23:23, it says, “…and their shouts prevailed.” The voices of accusation and pressure won in that moment. Jesus was condemned—not because He was guilty, but because He chose to endure it. This happened so that through His death, we could receive life through His resurrection. What looked like defeat was actually the unfolding of God’s greatest victory.

In the midst of His suffering, we see His heart in Luke 23:34“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Even on the cross, Jesus responds with mercy. No bitterness, no retaliation—only forgiveness. This reveals the depth of His love and sets the standard for how we are called to live.

In Luke 23:44–46, as darkness covers the land, Jesus fully surrenders Himself: “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit.” Even in His final moments, He entrusts everything to God. His life was not taken from Him—He willingly gave it.

Then in Luke 23:48, we see the reaction of the people: “…they beat their breasts and went away.” There is a realization of guilt, a sense that something wrong has been done. They recognized the weight of what had happened—they had condemned an innocent man. Yet many stopped there. They felt conviction, but did not move into true repentance. They did not remain at His feet or seek His forgiveness.

And this speaks directly to us. It is possible to feel conviction, to recognize our wrong, and yet not fully turn to Jesus. True transformation happens when we don’t just feel guilty—but when we come to Him, stay with Him, and receive His forgiveness.

Jesus chose surrender over self-defense, love over retaliation, and forgiveness over judgment—all to give us life. Our response is not just to recognize our need, but to come to Him fully, remain at His feet, and receive the grace He freely offers.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for choosing the cross for me. Thank You for Your silence, Your surrender, and Your incredible love. Teach me to trust You even when I don’t understand, and to respond with grace as You did. Help me not to stop at conviction, but to come fully to You in repentance. Let my heart remain at Your feet, receiving Your forgiveness and walking in Your life. Amen.
