Humility is not something we naturally have; it is a virtue that the Holy Spirit helps us develop as we focus on Jesus. Our world is full of distractions—family disputes, international conflicts, and countless other noises—that try to pull our attention away from God. The enemy further deceives us by attaching us to our own desires, leading us to seek God’s help with selfish motives. But we must remember that God, who is Holy, Sovereign, and Jealous, wants our undivided hearts.

Being humble and submitting to God go hand in hand. The Bible often tells us to humble ourselves before God and includes His promises when we do so. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Proverbs 22:4 teaches, “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” This means that humility, or respecting and honoring God, brings great rewards. Respecting the Lord means standing in awe of His holiness, submitting to Him, and honoring Him as the Creator of everything; this is the foundation of wisdom. Recognizing the danger of ignoring His commands helps us understand His supreme power over all.

As Christians, we are called to follow Jesus’ example. His life on Earth was full of humility, and even though He was later exalted, He lived as a servant. Humility helps us resist the devil and stay aligned with God’s will.

Jesus is our model for how we should treat one another. If He, being God, humbled Himself even to the point of dying on a cross, we too can practice humility towards each other. Choosing to put others before ourselves, even when it is hard, shows Christ’s selfless love.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12

This verse lists the virtues that come from the Holy Spirit, showing that true humility and being like Christ can only happen with the Spirit’s help. Thankfully, God has given us the Holy Spirit as our helper. It’s important to realize that this call to humility is for the whole church, not just individuals. When the body of Christ interacts humbly, God lifts up the entire church. God wants us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8).

To truly be humble, we need to build a close relationship with God through regular prayer. Our prayers should aim to know Him better, understand His nature, and learn about His character. This ongoing conversation with God changes our hearts and aligns our will with His. As we grow in our knowledge of God, we start to see Him as the highest authority and ourselves as His humble servants. This also changes how we see others, recognizing them as God’s image-bearers, deserving of love and respect.

Humility is not just a position we take; it is a way of life that reflects our understanding of who God is and who we are in relation to Him. When we see God as above all and others as His image-bearers, our interactions change. We become channels of His love, mercy, and grace, lifting others up and showing Christ’s humility in all we do.

Prayer: Father God, teach us to be humble and to submit ourselves fully to You. Help us to focus on Jesus and not be distracted by the world. Fill us with the Holy Spirit so we may embody compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. May we honor You in our interactions with others, seeing them as Your image-bearers. Elevate our church as we choose to walk humbly with You. Draw us closer to You through prayer, deepening our understanding of Your nature and character. Transform our hearts to reflect Your love and humility. Amen.
