Scripture Focus: John 11
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25–26)
Everything in this chapter leads to this one question: Do you believe this?
When Jesus speaks these words to Martha, He is not just offering comfort—He is inviting her into faith. In John 11:27, Martha responds with a powerful declaration, recognizing Him as the Messiah. In that moment, her belief does more than express agreement; it opens her heart to what Jesus is about to do. Belief becomes the doorway through which she will witness His power.
But belief does not remove pain.
As the story unfolds, we see another side of Jesus. When He sees Mary weeping, along with those around her, He is deeply moved and troubled (John 11:33). Even though He knows that Lazarus will be raised, He does not remain distant from their sorrow. Instead, He steps into it. Jesus weeps (John 11:35). This reveals His heart—He is not indifferent to our suffering. He is present in it.
And in the middle of that grief, Jesus brings the focus back to faith. In John 11:40, He reminds them: if they believe, they will see the glory of God. The miracle was never uncertain in His mind, but belief was the key to experiencing it. What He had already purposed needed to be received through faith.
Even beyond this moment, God is still at work in ways people do not fully understand. In John 11:50–51, Caiaphas speaks words that carry prophetic truth, though he does not realize it. God uses even his position to point to what Jesus would accomplish. This reminds us that God’s plans are unfolding, sometimes even through those who do not recognize it.
So through every part of this chapter—through belief, through sorrow, through revelation—the same question remains:
Do you believe this?
Because belief is not passive. It is what opens the door. It is what allows us to see God’s glory. It is what positions us to witness what He has already decided to do.
Prayer
Lord, Help me to truly believe—not just with words, but with my heart. Strengthen my faith so I can trust You even before I see. Thank You for being near to me in my pain and for revealing Your glory in Your perfect time. Amen.
