Scripture Focus: John 14
“Do not let your hearts be troubled.” John 14:1.
This verse does not mean that we will never feel troubled. We are human, and even Jesus Himself was troubled in spirit when He knew the cross was coming. A troubled heart is real—it can look like anxiety, fear of the future or circumstances, sorrow, grief, doubt, or struggling to trust God and understand His plan.
So the instruction is not to never feel troubled, but to not let our hearts stay there.
We are called to acknowledge what we feel, but not to settle in it. Instead, we are invited to trust in God. The Bible also tells us to guard our hearts above all else, because everything we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). When Scripture speaks about the heart, it is not the physical organ—it is our inner life: our soul, thoughts, desires, emotions, and will. It is the place where our relationship with God is formed and where transformation begins.
Then Jesus says in Gospel of John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” This shows us that loving Jesus is not only something we say—it is something we live. When we choose to obey Him, even in the middle of fear or uncertainty, we are choosing to trust Him.
And this comes with promises. In John 14:21, Jesus says that the one who loves Him and keeps His commands will be loved by the Father, and that He will reveal Himself to that person. Then in John 14:23, He promises that if anyone loves Him, the Father and the Son will come and make their home with them. This means we are not left alone in our struggles—God draws near and makes His dwelling with us.
Later, in John 14:27, Jesus speaks directly about peace: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This peace is different from what the world offers. It is not based on circumstances going well. It is a deep, steady peace that comes from Him, even when things around us are uncertain.
So a troubled heart is not something to deny—it is something to bring to God. And as we trust Him, guard our hearts, love Him, and walk in obedience, we experience His presence and His peace in a deeper way.
Prayer:
Lord, You see when my heart is troubled. Help me not to stay in fear, but to trust You. Teach me to guard my heart and to love You through obedience. Thank You for drawing near to me and for making Your home with me. Fill me with Your peace, even in the middle of uncertainty. Amen.
