Daily Reflection: Do You Believe?

Scripture Focus: John 20

John 20 is filled with moments of confusion, revelation, peace, and faith. Even after walking closely with Jesus, the disciples still struggled to fully understand everything He had told them. John 20:9 says, “They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.” This is a powerful reminder that following Jesus does not always mean understanding everything immediately. The disciples loved Him and followed Him, yet there were still mysteries they could not fully grasp at the time.

One of the most touching moments in this chapter is Mary Magdalene at the tomb. In her grief, she did not recognize Jesus at first. Jesus asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” (John 20:15). It was only when He called her by name that she recognized Him (John 20:16). What a beautiful picture of how personal Jesus is. In the middle of sorrow and confusion, one word from Him changed everything. Mary then responded in obedience and went to tell the others exactly what Jesus had told her to say (John 20:18).

Soon after, Jesus appeared to the disciples and spoke words they desperately needed: “Peace be with you” (John 20:19–21). Even after fear, failure, and uncertainty, Jesus came bringing peace instead of condemnation. His presence brought reassurance to hearts that had been shaken.

Then comes the moment with Thomas, who struggled with doubt until he saw Jesus for himself. Jesus told him, “Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27). This moment speaks deeply because it shows that Jesus meets people even in their struggles with faith, but He also calls them into belief.

John ends this chapter by explaining why these things were written: so that people may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing, they may have life in His name (John 20:30–31). The Bible itself is a gift from God, pointing hearts toward faith in Christ and the life found in Him alone.

John 20 ultimately asks one important question: Do you believe? Even without understanding everything perfectly, faith begins by trusting the One who calls each person by name, brings peace, and proves Himself faithful.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Word. Help us trust You even when we do not fully understand everything. Strengthen our faith, open our hearts to recognize Your voice, and lead us to walk in obedience and peace. May we believe more deeply, follow You more closely, and live in the life You have given us. Amen.
